Lemon-headed aliens, scrambled fighter jets and mysterious lights over a cemetery were among details of some 800 UFO sightings released by British authorities.
But another intriguing finding to emerge from the 1981-1996 archives was a surge in reports at the time of UFO-related blockbusters such as 1996's Independence Day, not to mention the British television run of The X-Files.
Among the most striking accounts released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is that of two boys who reported being spoken to by an alien with a lemon-shaped head, who appeared before them in a field on May 4, 1995.
"We want you, come with us," said the alien's voice, according to a police report filed after the youngsters, who seemed "agitated and distressed," recounted their experiences.
"They stated the object was about four houses high in the sky and about forty foot away from them," said the report, adding that when officers went to check two days later, they found only a farmer spraying his crops.
In another account bound to excite ufologists, a former armed forces chief urged authorities to take more seriously a report by US Air Force (USAF) staff near an airbase in eastern England.
The individuals "reported seeing a strange glowing object in the forest," said a report by a US air force commander, recounting what three of his staff told him of the incident, early on the morning of December 27, 1980.
"It illuminated the entire forest with a white light. The object itself had a pulsing red light on top and a bank of blue lights underneath. The object was hovering or on legs. As the patrolmen approached the object, it manoeuvred through the trees and disappeared."
Then there is the report of how, between November 1989 and April 1990, the Belgian air force scrambled F-16 fighter jets to investigate a series of UFO sightings - and reportedly "locked on" to them with their radars.
"The mystery remains unresolved," wrote General Wilfried de Brouwer, Chief of Operations, Belgian Air Staff, adding that despite being sceptical, "the evidence was remarkable."
One of the spookiest incidents occurred in the early hours of July 15, 1996, when a UFO was spotted hovering over a cemetery in Widnes, northwest England, before firing burning laser beams into the ground.
Cynics would note that the man involved was heading home from a night out at the time - possibly in a similar mental state to two revellers who claimed to have seen a UFO hovering over the jazz tent at the 1994 Glastonbury Festival.
And sceptics will also point to a more general trend made clear by the latest archives.
In 1995 there were 117 UFO sightings reported to authorities, but this spiked to 609 in 1996, according to the MoD reports, released after a three-year project with the National Archives.
"It's evident there is some connection between newspaper stories, TV programs and films about alien visitors and the numbers of UFO sightings reported," said UFO expert and journalism lecturer David Clarke.
"Aside from 1996, one of the busiest years for UFO sightings reported to the MoD over the past half century was 1978 - the year Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released," added Clarke.

I recently blogged about the curious fact that MUFON has been deluged with reports of UFO sightings from 1960 to 1990 ("Total Recall," 12/1/2011), and they can't explain why all these people are just now reporting sightings and encounters that took place so long ago. I think this is worth looking into. I had intended to go looking for some of these reports, to see what I could discover, and then one was ed to me, and it was so poignant that I had to comment on it.
This event took place on September 22, 1986, in Jasper, Georgia, and it involves an 11 year-old kid. What's amazing, and even touching, is how this person, 25 years later, still relates the events on such an emotional level...
"I was 11 years old in the bed fixing to get up to go to school. My mom woke me up all upset saying she dreamed of a tornado. She woke up and looked outside and saw a UFO. She said it was low on the ground making a beeping noise like it was in trouble and changed colors. Suddenly it took off. I laughed at her and said, "yeah right". I got up and looked out the window. It was back! I saw it too! My body was in complete shock and couldn't move. I saw that it was about 3 feet hovering above the ground, and it looked like a triangular shape. It was a solid white color for a few seconds. It didn't make a noise when I saw it. It was next to our big tree and mail box about 3 feet above ground on our dirt/gravel road (back then it was very remote). Then it changed colors from white to red or red to white and took off and dissappeared within a second!"
I love it when people are "fixin'" to do things, instead of actually just doing them. But I digress. The kid did get up, but not to go to school. What kind of a special day is it when your mom wakes you up to see a UFO in the yard? Especially a UFO that's beeping "like it was in trouble?" You get the feeling that the kid's about to tug on mom's sleeve and say, "It's hurt! Can we keep it, ma? Can we?"

"I got the courage to go outside to try and find evidence. I couldn't find anything and went back in the house. I know it had to be something (either something from the government, a real UFO, time travelers, or who knows). I still think about it till this day. I'm 100% sure it wasn't an airplane, and I didn't see this in the air. Also this UFO was not that big and could almost fit in my dining room. I didn't hear a sound with it which doesn't make sense because it should have broken the sound barrier when it disappeared. Till this day, I have never seen a UFO since then, and I still think about it. Also why did it come back when mom said it left? I feel that it wanted me to see it. I really want answers."
What a great kid! Can you doubt this story for one second? Sure, there are inconsistencies -- Did it change from red to white or white to red? Did it beep or was it silent? After 25 years, I'm not so sure it matters. All I know is, I'm fixin' to eat some Christmas cookies and give this some more thought...

The Pelican is pleased to note that he has received an Honourable Mention in Tim Printy's excellent SUNlite newsletter http://home.comcast.net/~tprinty/UFO/SUNlite1 4.pdf, which derives its inspiration from the "Skeptics UFO Newsletter", edited by the late, lamented, kindly old Uncle Phil. This mention consists of brief remarks about The Pelican's discussion of Richard Doty in his previous contribution to this blog. These remarks are indicative of the strange lack of curiosity concerning Doty's activities among American ufologists, and your feathered friend hopes to treat this matter at greater length in one of his future columns.
The main article in this issue of SUNlite is by Peter W. Merlin on physical evidence. Curtis Peebles has written on this theme in Magonia and Merlin has also worked extensively on the recovery of debris from crashed military aircraft, and has been able to prove that attempts to recover all the bits of wreckage are never entirely successful. The relevance of this to UFOs is of course that UFO crash retrieval enthusiasts insist that every scrap of wreckage from crashes of alien craft is always recovered.
Merlin's account of how he tried to convey the results of his investigations to ufologists also gives us (or, at least, The Pelican and his acolytes) further confirmation of the determination of ufologists, at least of the prevailing North American variety, to ignore or deny any evidence which might lead to rational, mundane explanations for UFO events, and to take seriously absurd and implausible claims, and faked documents.
When Merlin had obtained a great deal of data about the crash sites of experimental aircraft, technical details of these aircraft which had eventually been declassified, and bits of wreckage which the search teams had failed to find, his attention was drawn to the online UFO UpDates forum whose members "included a wide cross-section of people including some well-known names in ufology... " Starting a new thread "Crash Retrieval: A New Perspective", he gave details of the crash of an A-12 spy plane, near Wendover, Utah, in May 1963, and of his investigation of the crash site many years later.
He then awaited the response, expecting his contribution to start a spirited debate. However, after a month there had not been a single response. It seemed that the crash-retrieval UFO experts just didn't want to know.
Merlin also presented his findings to the 4th Annual UFO Crash Retrieval Conference, in November 2006 at Las Vegas. At the conclusion of his lecture he received "polite applause", and someone later told him that Linda Moulton Howe (she seems to pop up everywhere in American ufology, doesn't she?) suggested that he was "an obvious government agent".
As The Pelican never tires of pointing out, such well-meaning attempts at enlightening the ufological community are a waste of time. They are not interested in reality (at least so far as UFO stories are concerned), they are interested only in a make-believe world in which alien craft fly at will through our atmosphere, sometimes even shooting down military aircraft.
They and the general public have no proof of all this, of course, because the physical proof is kept secret by the US government which is apparently omniscient and omnipotent in matters ufological, but just very powerful, and sometimes prone to error and even failure in many of its other activities. This is, The Pelican supposes, analogous to the Pope being infallible in matters of faith and morals, but not in other matters, such as predictions of horse races and other sporting events (which is perhaps just as well). However, the analogy should not be pressed too far, for as the Monty Python team used to say: "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"
The point here, of course, is that the ufologists' fantasy world does not even have its own internal logic, unlike most fantasy and science fiction stories. They are happy with their dreams of aliens, their spacecraft and government cover-ups, and will continue to denounce or ignore anything which threatens to destroy their subject's mystique.

The following is a story that is reported to be one of the most important Alien contact story's in history. I know I've said from the start i would stay away from some of the more ridiculous and far fetched UFO stories out there and this might seem like the most ridiculous of all but bare with me as it's universally recognised as a significantly important UFO encounter story. In January 1981 in a place called Ajusco near Mexico City a reporter by the name of Carlos Diaz was sat in his car waiting for a friend when he noticed a strange orange glow in the valley below. At first he thought it was a forest fire but on further investigation he realised it was a UFO. The craft flew within 30ft of his car and he managed to take a series of photographs before the craft silently shot straight up into the air and disappeared into the night.
He was astounded by what he saw and couldn't get it out of his mind, Diaz became so engrossed by his sighting that he started to return to the spot on a daily basis with the hope of seeing the craft again. Several weeks passed and there was nothing, just as he began to give up hope of ever seeing the UFO again it reappeared. Diaz stated the weather was atrocious that night but the UFO was clearly visible with its bright orange glow. He crawled through the rain and poor visibility to a point about fourty meters from the object and was amazed by the amount of detail he could see on the craft. The UFO was dome shaped and smooth around the top with strange cylindrical circles underneath. Diaz was so transfixed by the UFO he didn't notice someone creeping up behind him, he was suddenly grabbed by the shoulder and immediately passed out. He woke up hours later and found himself to be completely dry despite the heavy rain just before he passed out.
Diaz picked himself up slightly confused and bewildered and made his way home. Despite his strange experience he returned the next day to find what he described as a strange alien looking entity sitting on the grass near the spot where he had passed out. He was told by this alien being that he had been taken aboard the UFO the day before and even though he doesn't remember now he would remember in time, the alien then disappeared. Over time Diaz's memory returned and he recalled being inside a massive cave and seeing the UFO parked on some sort of raised platform. The cave he said was awe inspiring and seemed to contain lots of Mayan type sculptures. The cave was full of people walking around and Diaz was led to a smaller cave and placed inside a giant glowing egg shaped object. Whilst inside he was transported to a tropical rainforest and could feel the atmosphere of the forest as he walked through it. Shortly after experiencing this he was removed from the egg by the Alien and transported back outside onto the grass.
These visits continued for many years after and according to him still go on to this day. Why do I care for UFOs? Because I am interested in all sorts of science, but have come to the conclusion that research is a long-winded process. Learning from an advanced civilisation would speed up our quest for answers significantly. Decades or even centuries of academic studies could be shortcut. I must emphasise that I am not talking about the field of propulsion technology in the first place. I'M TALKING ABOUT PROFOUND ANSWERS ABOUT OUR EXISTENCE. How are we going to find out anyway? The easiest way, would be to go and ask someone who might know, right? FACT: The general public is not very dedicated to seeking the "UFO truth". Why the lack of care? I susspect that: THE MAIN REASON WHY PEOPLE DON'T TAKE THIS PHENOMENON SERIOUSLY, IS THAT IT IS MADE BELIEVE THAT IT CLASHES WITH THE COMMON LAWS OF MODERN PHYSICS. Anyone who got into popular science, knows that interstellar space travel is very unlikely if not impossible. The sheer vastness of space and the limit of the speed of light, makes it hard to imagine that we have ever been visited. That is at least what scientists teach us - AS A CONSEQUENCE, THIS PARADIGM RULES OUT THE WHOLE ALIEN/UFO THEORY. - WHEN WE TALK ABOUT UFOS WE ALWAYS ASSUME THE ALIENS COME FROM OUTER SPACE. I really wonder why we do this in the first place? UFOs are a phenomenon that occur on this planet. We see them here with our naked eyes. It's not like we looked through the telescope and discovered something far away on another planet or star system. What does Occam's Razor tell us about the origin of this observation? A simple explanation makes sense. It's more complicated to think that this civilisation goes back and forth between the stars, than to accept that they are permanently present. What we see belongs where we see it! What is more likely? 1. AN ALIEN CIVILISATION THAT MANAGES TO BREAK THE LAWS OF PHYSICS AS WE KNOW IT AND TRAVEL MILLIONS OF LIGHT YEARS TO VISIT US, AND THEN HIDE FROM US. 2. AN UNKNOWN TECHNICALLY ADVANCED SPECIES, THAT MANAGES TO HIDE FROM US ON THIS PLANET.TRAVELLING LIGHT YEARS THROUGH VACUUM VS. CAMOUFLAGE I don't really like the idea of what I'm suggesting here, and it is just not as cool as space travel... But let's face it... A good camouflage is way more likely, if you ask me. I'm not trying to say how they do it, because I have no clue. But for just one example: To build underground bases under the sea will take much less energy than any interstellar flight. Maybe they use the heat from the Earth's core as an energy source, who knows... bla bla, it's not important how they do it. The the only point is that it's a much more feasible thing to do. Space travel is just the less likely explanation to the phenomenon. When you approach the speed of light, the energy needed for propulsion tends to go to infinity. To create a "warp drive" is theoretically possible, but needs such an excessive amount of energy, that nearby planets will be ripped apart. So my point is that ufologists should look into this problem from an Earth's perspective. As I said, I don't like theory very much, because it has something of paranoia. Maybe one day it will come out that there is no such thing as another civilisation, that's fine with me, but for a start scientists should approach this problem from the most likely perspective. First I thought, right, now that there is a possible explanation, maybe people will become more interested in the subject. But on second thought, I don't think this theory will become very popular. It will crush our ego much more than if they were aliens. It would imply that we are not the number one on this planet. Inconceivable that there is another race superior to us, fooling us for thousands of years. We didn't even have the moral right to fight them back and kick them out. It is also obvious that this civilisation wants to be left alone by us.This ties in with the earthbound hypothesis.Because they live here they have great interest to be left alone and not be discovered.They are aware of the aggressive human nature, and don't want to have any cultural clashes going on.If there would be from outer space, they could go back and not care so much about the after effects of this revelation.Maybe they are in contact with our world leaders, and made them clear that disclosure is not an option, under no circumstances.Barrack Obama has the phasor-pistol on his chest probably.
