A good friend of mine and I went for a Hot Chocolate together today. We frequent a small Sweet Shop in the Harbor Town near by and often stop in for the best Hot Chocolate around. This friend of mine is a life long pal. We have known each other since the second grade. This friend knows me well and knew I was a bit stressed. We sat and talked awhile when my friend looked over her cup at me and said, " So what's eating at you?"
Knowing it would be fruitless to try to brush off my pal's question I sat back and answered her with one word. "People".
My friend laughed at me rolled her eyes and added, "So what else is new?" We chuckled and I started to explain to my friend the down side of my decisions to come out of my own writers closet of safe subjects and accepted articles and plunge head first into the world of the Paranormal. I knew it would be difficult. I knew it would frighten some and others would ridicule me. I knew I would be forced to protect people at the cost of my own peril. I knew all of this and thought I was prepared to finally come forward and tell the experiences I personally endured -along with the countless encounters others have shared with me.
I was not however prepared at the nasty reactions of those who have known me privately or the mean spirited nature pointed at my stepping out of the dark and into the light about things most just do not understand.
The holidays just ended. It was extremely busy this year and I was placed party after party with those I have not seen in awhile. I saw relatives and friends alike. It was a good time as I was able to visit with them all as well as a difficult one.
I discovered right away that my deciding to focus on being a full time Paranormal writer was something that hit some type of discord with all who knew me. I heard one off handed remark after the other, I was insulted and I was finding myself in one uncomfortable situation after the other. I had people I knew all my life say terrible things to me. I found a few hostile and extremely nasty- all due to the fact I was writing about things like UFO's, Aliens and the unknown. I backed out of invitations after a few days and felt sad that so many were, well frankly, so ignorant.
I wonder how and when did so many become so close-minded and limited? I wondered how these people thought they were ever going to evolve if they turned hostile and ugly when ever subjects they had no knowledge or limited information about were brought up?
Is this the way we made our way out of the cave and into the condo? It was really astounding to listen and watch those I know turn on me over my choice to investigate, write about and bring to light subjects simply because they were uncomfortable with them. What is that about? What is this sheep like behavior of hating things unknown that seems to penetrate society? Are people truly this stunted and dumb?
I will admit that other issues may have been at play here. I love what I do. I plan to continue what I am doing until I can reach all I can. I refuse to run with packs
of fools who become nasty and mean spirited over things they do not understand or WANT to understand. I know I am determined and hard working and that may be a problem for those who aren't. I also realize I make people uncomfortable suggesting their safe little known worlds may not be as safe or known as they wish them to be. I guess they feel if they kill the messenger the message will die too!
I am not sure what or why I was faced with such a unpleasant reaction to my decided path. I only know it was a real awakening and no matter what, I must continue doing what I am doing. If I am writing things that make this much impact on those who know me, I know I am hitting a nerve in society. I realize I should not, can not, stop even if I wanted to.
I told all of this to my pal. She sat and listened and when I had talked myself out she looked at me and said. " That was good, go home and write it and let them know you know they are in the way". "In the way?" I questioned her remark. "Come on, you know they are just frightened to death you may be onto stuff they don't want to face and really mad you may be a success getting it out there." I had to laugh at my friend as she never missed a sip of her Hot Chocolate or a bite of her brownie. She looked up as she took a break from chewing and said, " Your not going to let a bunch of dumb bells stop you are you? You didn't think they were going to make it easy or be happy for you did you?"
I just shook my head. No I was not going to let anyone stop me. I just didn't think the fear of these subjects would create such extreme reactions from the people I knew. The funny thing is that the friends who I thought would question me the most turned out to be the ones who support me the most. I have a great deal of friends who work in science. I thought they would question me and find my choice to write full time about the paranormal something they would reject. The complete opposite has happened and they have become not only my support group but many have been those who have supplied me with experiences of their own.
The moral of this article is the realization of how deeply brainwashed we have become to dismiss, ignore, reject and attack the very things we should want to know. I do not know what has happened to mankind. I do know they seem to have slammed down the lid on thinking and replaced it with a do as they are told dull wit that has them closed minded, blind and in many cases just plain boring.
I have decided to pick up speed with my writing about the paranormal. I hope you will all increase your desire to learn about things that to date remains unknown. There is more going on here that meets the eye. What has caused this extreme reaction to all things paranormal? Why are so many so angry and dumbed down? Curious minds want to know. North Bergen, New Jersey- Situated on the Hudson river directly opposite New York City, this small city has experienced over 7,000 sightings over a 5 year period.

Illinois- Has a few from St, Louis up the center of the state to Rockford, which is quite hot. Rockford just had a sighting of abut a dozen UFO's over the city, January of 2001.

Biography:
LINDA MOULTON HOWE is a graduate of Stanford University with a Masters Degree in Communication. She has devoted her documentary film, television, radio, writing and reporting career to productions concerning science, medicine and the environment. Ms. Howe has received local, national and international awards, including three regional Emmys, a national Emmy nomination and a Station Peabody award for medical programming. Linda's documentaries have included A Strange Harvest and Strange Harvests 1993, which explored the worldwide animal mutilation mystery. Another film, A Prairie Dawn, focused on astronaut training in Denver. She has also produced documentaries in Ethiopia and Mexico for UNICEF about child survival efforts and for Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta about environmental challenges.
In addition to television, Linda produces, reports and edits the award-winning science, environment and earth mysteries news website, Earthfiles.com. In 2003, Earthfiles received an Award for Standard of Excellence presented by the Internet's WebAward Association. A telescope and infrared equipment will be launched in a huge helium balloon that will rise to almost 23 miles in the upper atmosphere in order to study ISON. Research scientist Karl Hibbitts told Linda that one of their goals in studying ISON is to measure the ratio of carbon dioxide to water, which gives insight into the formation characteristics of our solar system, and the Oort Cloud where the comet arose

Back when I was in graduate school and preparing to write my dissertation, I learned that the first thing you did to prepare was make a search of the literature... well, the second thing, after you have figured out what you wanted to research. You looked to see what others had done before you, if someone had already accomplished what you wanted to, and how you might improve on both your idea and what had gone before. Apparently in UFO research, this is not the case. I don't know how many times we must revisit cases that seem to have been solved, that seem to have nothing to do with UFOs, or that are hoaxes. Every five years or so another crop of interested people show up and we begin all over again... and somehow the blame is pushed on the "Geezers." We just haven't made the case, whatever the case might be. Take the Allende Letters, that group of correspondence between Carlos Allende or Carl Allen and Morris K. Jessup. Allende/Allen wrote about Jessup's UFO books. Allende/Allen suggested a knowledge that was based on inside information and personal observation. Part of it was the so-called Philadelphia Experiment in which it is claimed that the US Navy teleported a ship in 1943. Ignore the fact that no documentation has ever surfaced to prove it. Ignore the fact that the allegedly teleported ship's logs place it elsewhere at the time. Ignore the fact that there is nothing to support this claim except Allende's allegation. Allende/Allen arrived in Tucson, Arizona in the 1970s, apparently on his way to Mexico for cancer treatment. While in Tucson he met with Jim Lorenzen, then the International Director of APRO and signed a statement that the whole Philadelphia Experiment, the letters, and everything else associated with it was a hoax. Allende/Allen said he made it up because Jessup's writing frightened him and he didn't want Jessup to write anything more. To me, that admission, by Allende/Allen ends the discussion. It is a hoax. It is an admitted hoax. They guy who started it said it was a hoax. What more do we need? Remember, that was in the 1970s. I even did a magazine article about this in the 1970s. Robert Goerman, a UFO researcher interested in the Allende Letters found Allende's family who told him, Goerman, that Allende was slightly unhinged... bright but unhinged. There was nothing to the story he told... But then the youngsters enter the field, bringing their "fresh" perspective to it, and we begin again to hear about the value of the Allende Letters. We hear there might be something to them. We hear how they might be the key to solving the UFO mystery... and away we go again, covering the same ground because Allende/Allen's admission of hoax was forced by the CIA and should therefore be ignored. Or take the latest of the Aztec "re-investigations." We have a new book that suggests that there might be something to the Aztec UFO crash. Once again, this is a case that should have been relegated to a footnote a long time ago. It is clear that Aztec is a hoax started by a con man, Silas Newton, who is probably laughing his ass off in his grave because there are still people who believe it. Newton told the story to Frank Scully who made fun of it in his newspaper column in 1948, but a couple of years later Scully seemed to have changed his mind and suddenly began to believe the tale. He wrote a book about it that became a bestseller... and then J. P. Cahn wrote an expose about it that should have put the whole thing to rest... but didn't. In the 1970s Robert Spencer Carr said that he had found five witnesses to the Aztec crash and the case was revitalized... but even the reinvestigation failed to find much in the way of evidence. Carr relied on unidentified witnesses and rumor and we don't know who his witnesses were or why he accepted what they said. There was nothing new... until the 1980s when William Steinman began his new investigation, "proving" there was something to the crash tale. Of course, Steinman offered little evidence of anything other than he is a fan of garage sales and that he had been to Aztec annoying the locals with his less than gracious manner. But even with all these investigations and the failure to find anything substantial, Aztec is back. We're told that the proof is now incontrovertible, but it is weak at best. Though we're told to ignore Newton and his con man buddy Leo GeBauer, they are still tied to the case. We are treated to links between alleged witnesses and the event, but when we look deeper, we find the links broken. There is simply nothing there that hasn't been discussed before, yet we're supposed to roll over and accept this new data as if it is proof. I could go on in this vein. We have arguments that maybe the contactees had something important to say, but in reality, they merely cluttered the UFO field with their nonsense making it easier to hide the truth, whatever that truth might be. We hear about great air wars between the aliens and our Air Force, but the evidence doesn't hold up to scrutiny. We have phenomenon, such as crop circles linked to UFOs, but that really should be another field of research...(get it? Field?). True, there are some things that do need to be reexamined. The Majorie Fish Star Map that was based on Betty Hill's memory needs new work now that we have better information. Some of the stars she used are not where we had thought them to be and she excluded red dwarves because she didn't think there was anything interesting to be found near them, not to mention there are so many of them. Fish's work was great when she did it, but it is now badly out of date. Maybe a youngster who plays with computers could do the work in minutes rather than the months it took Fish. The point is that we geezers have something to add, if only it is to direct the youngsters into areas that should be explored. We don't really need to study the Allende Letters again. We have all we need to know about Aztec, and if Scott Ramsey really spent a half a million dollars on his research, I can think of better areas that he could have explored with that kind of money. So rather than dismiss us all as failures, maybe some should look to what we have learned. It just might save someone a half million dollar mistake; years of research that will go nowhere, or help focus the spotlight on areas that could provide a breakthrough or two. And rather than pit the geezers against the youngsters as some are attempting, maybe we should all work together. Why does it have to be an either or propostion?
